Humberside Area Guide

The Lincolnshire countryside surrounding Humberside airport is packed with exciting attractions and things to do. The airport is actually sandwiched between two traditional football-and-steel-works towns, Grimsby and Scunthorpe. Grimsby is the main town in north-east Lincolnshire (population 91,000) and was once the world's largest fishing port back in the 19th century. Today much of the town has been rebuilt with pedestrian malls and good local facilities. Grimsby is home to the popular People's Park, a Victorian park and gardens which has attractive floral displays and a heart shaped lake. Grimsby Auditorium serves as the premier entertainment venue for North East Lincolnshire. It hosts a variety of events including dance, comedy and music.

At Winterton, near Scunthorpe, the fascinating remains of the Roman-British Villa, are just to the west of what was once a main Roman road between Lincoln and York. Archaeological investigations have uncovered various artefacts at the site including structural evidence, 2nd century pottery, and evidence of late-Roman period bronze-working.

Also worth visiting is Pleasure Island theme park in Cleethorpes, which caters for all ages, with a variety of rides and attractions ranging from the traditional to the latest white-knuckle thrillers.
