Bristol Area Guide
Bristol is a thriving city set in the south west which offers visitors a host of attractions and entertainment options whilst being a great central point for exploring the close-by Somerset countryside, Cotswolds villages, Wales and the south west coastline.
A major symbol of the city is Brunel's Clifton Suspension Bridge, this inspiring engineering example stretches across the Avon Gorge and is a stunning site lit up at night. Close by, Clifton Village is well worth a visit with its numerous restaurants, bars, cafés and shops set amongst attractive Georgian architecture.
The bustling dock area near the city centre has been regenerated and offers visitors some vibrant nightlife and entertainment as well as being home to several museums including the modern At-Bristol development with its technological centre and Imax theatre. Some historical attractions that should not be missed include the world's first great ocean liner - SS Great Britain docked down at the waterfront; the impressive Cathedral dating back to 1140 and the City Museum and Art Gallery located close together in Clifton.
There are plenty of shopping options within the city, whether in the large department stores and shopping centres of the city centre, the smaller more specialised shops found in and around the Clifton area or the vast out of town shopping Mall.
The large student population ensures a lively atmosphere and nightlife and entertainment are in abundance with a great selection bars, restaurants and clubs throughout the city centre and dotted around the surrounding areas. There is also a choice of several theatres and concert venues offering major musicals, popular plays and the big names in music.
